Whanganui's Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua is a must-visit destination for anyone with an interest in and appreciation for art and history. With a collection of more than 8,300 artworks spanning 400 years, our gallery is a true community asset.

Our gallery's collection is of national and international significance, covering four centuries of European art history and all of New Zealand's art history. And with an ongoing programme of exhibitions and events, there's always something new to discover and explore.

Our origins can be traced back to 1912, when Henry Sarjeant left a huge sum of money to establish the gallery as a "means of inspiration for ourselves and those who come after us." We opened in 1919 and have since become one of the country's most important heritage buildings.

Over the last 103+ years, through the Sarjeant bequest and the many kind gifts of subsequent benefactors, the collection has grown in size and importance. Notably, the Sarjeant Collection includes one of New Zealand's best photographic collections, including the Denton Collection. And outside private collections, the gallery houses the largest holding of Edith Collier's work.

So if you're looking for a unique and inspiring cultural experience, be sure to visit us, with our impressive collection and ongoing programme of exhibitions and events, it's a true gem in the heart of the city.
